Funeral services for Wm. A. Owens, 43, who died suddenly Sunday afternoon [May 25, 1952] were conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Wanchese Methodist Church with Rev. C.W. Guthrie officiating. Masonic Rites at the gravesite in Tillett Cemetery in Wanchese. The body lay in state one hour before the service.
He was in his garden Sunday afternoon and came to the house saying an insect had bitten him on his leg. Shortly afterward he complained of nausea and pain and Twiford's ambulance was called to take him to Dr. Wright in Currituck, and he
died shortly before reaching the doctor's office. Death was pronounced due to poisoning believed to be a "Black Widow" bite.
He had resided on Roanoke Island 37 years and was the husband of Mrs. Iva Tillett Owens, and the son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Weatherly Owens. He is survived by two children: Wm. Conrad and Myrna Kay; one brother, Zack Owens of Norfolk; and one sister, Mrs. Joe Swindell of Wanchese.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Methodist church and was highly regarded as a citizen and had been employed for many years by ? T. Westcott. (The Coastland Times [Manteo, NC] - Friday, May 30, 1952; pg.1)
